The West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University (WCSUH), originating from the former Departments of Ob/Gyn and Pediatrics setting up in 1942 of the University Hospital affiliated with the former West China University of Medical Sciences, started its operation in 1988 under the direct leadership of the Ministry of Health of China (MOH). It is the largest women’s and children’s hospital in southwest China, and enjoys many titles, such as “Baby Friendly Hospital” awarded by MOH, UNICEF and WHO in 1993, “Top Tertiary Hospital” for women and children rated in 1998, “National Advanced Women Unit” in 2003, “Workers’ Day Award of Sichuan Province” in 2007, “Advanced Unit in Fighting Earthquake” in June 2008.
 
The WCSUH covers an area of 56,500 square meters, with 466 registered beds, 11 clinical departments and divisions, 5 technical departments, a West China Research Institute for Health of Women and Children (including the West China Developmental & Stem Cell Biology Institute, 8 theme laboratories, and one open laboratory), and 2 journal editorial offices. The National Center for Birth Defects Monitoring of Ministry of Health of China and National Office for Surveillance of Health of Women and Children, the Sexuality Association of Sichuan Province, the Women’s Cancer Prevention Center of China Cancer Foundation Chengdu Branch, the Cervical Cancer Specialty Committee of Provincial Anticancer Association, the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Academic Committee are based in this hospital. The hospital is also assigned by the MOH as advisors and supervisors for MCH projects in Southwest China.
 
Our Ob/Gyn and Pediatrics both are National Key Disciplines and Key Disciplines of Sichuan Province. The Gynecological Oncology and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology are Key Clinical Disciplines of MOH. The Laboratories of Gynecological Oncology and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and the Perinatal and Reproductive Medicine are Key Laboratories of Sichuan Province.
 
Among its 437 staff members, there are 54 professors, 73 associate professors, 30 tutors for doctorial candidates, 70 tutors for master candidates, 23 academic leaders of the Department of Health of Sichuan and the Sichuan Provincial Government, 25 winners of the National Special Government Allowances and Provincial Allowances for Middle-aged and Young Specialists with Prominent Achievements. Forty percent of our staff has been trained abroad. The directors of ob/gyn academic committee and pediatric committee and pediatric academic committee of the Chengdu Medical Society are all from this hospital.
 
The WCSUH is a center for patients with critical and complicated diseases from Sichuan province and even other provinces in west China. In recent years, the annual outpatient visits reach 890,000 and annual discharges 29,000. The Clinical Pharmacologic Institute of SFDA, Gynecological Endoscope Training Center of MOH, Child CHD Training Center of CMDA and Sichuan Provincial Prenatal Diagnostic Center are all based in the hospital. The hospital offers customized services to meet diversified needs of our clients. We are strong in gynecological cancer, dystrophy of vulva, genetic counseling, generation and reproductive endocrinology, sterility, menopause, high risk pregnancy, perinatal healthcare, gynecologic LASER, maternal care, adolescence, pediatric nephropathy, digestion disorder, respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, neurology, endocrine, hematonosis, immune diseases, child communicable diseases,neonatology, child health care, child growth and development, nutrition and physiology consultation, and so on.
 
The WCSUH is well equipped with over 300 sophisticated and large medical equipments and devices of state of the arts, including monitoring system for intensive care, the severe cases rescue rate reached up to 95%. The WCSUH have established an obstetric central monitoring network system, and a home tele-monitoring system for fetus. Sichuan’s first in-vitro fertilization (IVF) baby was born in this hospital. The first successful case of assisted pregnancy of post-menopause women in Sichuan was performed in this hospital. Every year, about 2,000 women with cancer come here for diagnosis and treatment, and over 6,000 for endoscopic surgeries. Remarkable achievements have been done in high-risk pregnancy, child hematological diseases and neonatal disease, the interventional treatment of children with congenital heart disease, pediatric nutrition and kidney diseases. We are the first hospital in southwest China to introduce interventional treatment of CHD into clinical services, and perform more than 400 PS balloon dilatation, PDA, ASD, VSD occlusion interventional operations annually. The complete remission rate of treatment of hematological oncology such as leukemia is 95.3%, 5-year survival rate reaches 70%. Our diagnosis and treatment of congenital infections of newborn, neonatal jaundice, neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, epilepsy, children kidney diseases, children digestive diseases is acknowledged by peers. The number of patients treated in the Division of Neurological Rehabilitation exceeds 30000 every year, and the patients being diagnosed and treated with gastroscopy approach 1000 each year; and we initiated in southwest China the treatment of Mediterranean anemia and leukemia with Cord Blood Stem Cell Transplant.
 
Over the past 5 years, our hospital has obtained over 160 grants including programs of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSFC) and the Ministry of Health of China. We are honored by more than 50 awards from the governments of all levels for research. About 1400 papers and 150 books have been published. We emphasize cooperation and exchanges with overseas medical institutes. Over 80 overseas experts have been invited to our hospital for academic exchanges. More than 70 members of our faculty and staff have been sent abroad for advanced training or academic conferences.
 
We are very proud of our staff’s efforts in fighting the disastrous earthquake of May 12, 2008. About 4,000 patients and their companions, including 623 inpatients, 63 Pediatric ICU patients, 50 neonates and 5 ob/gyn patients, have been evacuated to safety within one hour, instructed by the effective team of hospital leadership responding to the emergence. During the process, we successfully treated two children in critical conditions, performed C-section to a pregnant woman who gave birth to twins. In the moment of earthquake, we had seventeen patients being operated. All the patients were attended by our dedicated doctors and nurses and went through successful operations. As a quick response to the catastrophe, we dispatched 200 doctors and nurses in 13 batches to most devastated areas like Dujiangyan City, Beichuan County, Mianyang City, Mianzhu City, Shifang City, 57 staffs for patient transfer from the airport to hospitals in Chengdu City. After the quake, we have received about 300 patients from quake-hit areas and raised more than 219,000 RMB yuan for disaster relief.
 
On May 29th, 2008, we initiated the Project for Restoration of Health System for Women and Children in Quake-hit Areas, with Dr. LI Hong, Executive Vice President of Sichuan University, as CEO and Dr. MAO Meng, President of this hospital, as COO of this project. This project covers Mianzhu, Shifan, Wenchuan, Dujiangyan, Jingyou. And many institutes and organizations have joined our work, including Chinese Society of Psychology, Psychology Institute of Chinese Science Academy, Chinese Immigrants Emergency Relief (Canada), Project HOPE (USA), Children’s Heartlink (USA), Chinese Association at Hawaii, and International Pediatrics Association.
